Water Treatment, Kumasi, Ghana, Africa

This project covered the upgrading and rehabilitation of water treatment works at three locations serving Kumasi in Ghana, Barikese and Owabi Water Treatment Works and Suame Distribution Centre. The £1.0 million contract for the complete mechanical and electrical works, awarded to Naston by the Crown Agents on behalf of Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation in March 1989, was completed and commissioned in March 1991.

Due to the nature of the contract, it was necessary to carry out a detailed engineering survey in Ghana, prior to final design and procurement. Treatment Plant process commissioning and operator training was completed under the supervision of Naston's specialist commissioning chemist and comprehensive operation and maintenance manuals were provided as part of the contract.

Owabi Works
The works at Owabi was fist commissioned in 1954, to treat from Owabi reservoir to provide an output of 11,500 cubic metres per day. The contract included full refurbishment, modification and necessary replacement of existing plant to achieve a treated output of 13,600 cubic metres per day.

The scope of this work included raw screening flow control, aeration and chemical mixing, upward flow clarification, rapid gravity sand filtration, filter washing, chemical preparation and dosing instrumentation and control.

Barikese Works
The original works at Barikese was commissioned in 1971 to treat from the Barikese reservoir. The contract included full refurbishment, modification and necessary replacement of existing plant to achieve a treated output of 54,000 cubic metres per day.

The scope of their work included raw screening, flow control, aeration and chemical mixing, radial flow clarification, rapid gravity sand filtration, filter washing, chemical preparation and dosing, instrumentation and electrical control.

Suame Distribution Centre
At Suame, the contract covered provision of new facilities to rechlorinate up to 68,000 cubic metres per day being delivered to the service reservoirs from the rehabilitated works at Barikese and Owabi.

The scope of this work included gas chlorination, motive water pumping, chlorine drum handling, personnel safety, ventilation, fume detection, instrumentation and electrical control. In addition to the new chlorination system work, on this site included the replacement of level monitoring and miscellaneous equipment in the existing service reservoirs.

Following the successful installation of a plant for Camp 37 in Accra, a further contract was won for the project at Takoradi in June 1996. The two contracts involved the supply and installation of raw pumping stations and Constant Transfer packaged plants to serve military barracks. Each unit was designed for a population equivalent of 5000 and a daily flow of up to 1000 cubic metres.
